Quiet Days

The Franciscan Notes with Reverend Oliver Stevens

21st of February 2025

For over 800 years, St. Francis of Assisi has been celebrated for his love of nature and animals, but his life offers much more to explore. This session, led by Olive Stevens of the Third Order Franciscans, will delve into the humility, love, and joy that defined St. Francis, inviting participants to reflect on how these virtues connect to their own spiritual journeys. Through stories and writings, attendees will gain fresh perspectives on how St. Francis's timeless wisdom can inspire and transform lives today.

The Sacredness of Grief with Rev Mary West

16th of May 2025

The grief journey is a long and complicated one. Our instinct, when confronted by loss, is to retreat into ourselves, cover up what we truly feel or bury deep within us the emotions we experience. Perhaps the grief journey might be one not to be avoided but one which may prove to be a journey of discovery finding within it a deep spiritual healing, a deeper understanding of ourselves and the opportunity to become more acquainted with this ‘holy visitor’. Carl Jung wrote: embrace your grief for there your soul will grow. During this quiet day we will seek to address and explore these issues.

Discipleship, Hope and Disappointment with Canon Dr Lynda Barley

20th of June 2025

The Cornish seas, part of our Celtic heritage, remind us of the calm we seek in life, yet disappointments can leave us feeling adrift and lost. This quiet day offers a chance to reflect on such challenges, drawing strength from Isaiah’s words, “in rest and quietness shall be your strength” (Isaiah 30:15). With the calming music of Simeon Wood, we will seek refuge in the psalms and gospels, finding renewed confidence and direction for our journey.

Moses: The Ideal Leader? with Rev Dr Liz Grier

19th of September 2025

The book of Hebrews records Moses as a hero of the faith. The writer of Deuteronomy claims there has never been anyone like him. He was sent by God and saves his people from a seemingly impossible situation. Yet in the first narratives about Moses at the start of Exodus, Moses is surprisingly not what these epitaphs may lead us to expect. Through studying and reflecting on Exodus 1-4.17 we will look at what we can learn about Moses, God, calling and the nature of faith.
